As of 10/05/2020 Canyon County Recorder’s & Passports office is switching to accepting passport applications by appointments only. If you are applying for the first time or renewing your U.S. Passport both Canyon County Recorders & Passport and the Federal Passport facilities warns, that you will experience significant delays of several months in receiving your U.S. Passport. This includes the return of your evidence of citizenship documents (such as birth certificates or naturalization certificates). PASSPORT BOOK & CARD APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
The following is provided as a guide to help with your application. All passport information is not included. For more passport information, click here.

APPLICATION: Each person applying needs an application. To get to forms please click here.

  • DS-11 Application for a U.S. Passports: for applicants applying for the first time or children.
  • DS-82 Renewal Application: for adults who are renewing their expired passports (under 15 years from issue date). For more information click here.
    • Must submit old passport.
    • Passport cannot be damaged.
    • Expired passport must be issued for 10 years for this application.
  • ANYONE APPLYING FOR A PASSPORT MUST APPEAR IN PERSON (BABIES, CHILDREN & ADULTS)

BIRTH CERTIFICATE: When applying for a U.S. Passport, you will need to have a state certified birth certificate from the state where you were born. (Hospital birth certificates or birth abstracts are not acceptable.) If you are a naturalized citizen, you will need your naturalization certificate. All certificates are mailed with the application and returned with the passport. If you have an expired U.S. passport it needs to be used in place of the birth certificate. Children must provide their birth certificate with the expired U.S. passport.

PASSPORT PHOTOS: Our facility doesn’t take photos. Please provide two identical passport photos, 2 x 2 inches are needed when applying.  These pictures must have been taken within the last six months. School photos, snapshots, or pictures taken in a booth are not acceptable.  Photographs must be a clear front view, full face on a plain (white or off-white) background. The image size measured from the bottom of your chin to the top of your head (including hair) should not be less than 1 inch nor more than 1 3/8 inches. Shadows in photos will not be accepted. Do not wear camouflage, white shirts, hats, hair bows or glasses.  Naturalization Photos will not work.

EVIDENCE OF IDENTITY: A valid government ID is required for evidence of your identity. Driver’s License is the best form of Id. The form of ID used must be valid and bear a picture of the holder. Parent ID is used for minors.

Recommended to bring secondary ID such as school ID, Work ID, Insurance card, Medical cards, Hunting & Fishing licenses, Car registration, Library card and Membership card (with your name on it)

SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER: Everyone, including children, will need to have their social security number ready and available when applying for a passport.  Social security cards ARE NOT required, only social security numbers.

MINOR PASSPORT APPLICATION (Under the age of 16): Two parents or guardians must appear using the DS-11 application for a minor child under the age of 16. Children’s passports cannot be renewed. Passport issued out to children under the age of 16 are only valid for 5 years. For more info click here.

We are not a passport issuing agency, only an acceptance agency.

PASSPORT PROCESSING TIME: Processing times do not include mailing times. Canyon County Recorder & Passports is an acceptance facility; Canyon County does not make passports.

  • Routine processing for passport is 10-13 weeks.
  • Expedited service can take up to 9 weeks additional $60.00 for each applicant (Check or Money Order only).
  • The expedite fee does not shorten the mailing time.
    • If you want to expedite mailing time you will need to pay additional fees. See fees for the rush on mailing.
